Things that bring me joy in fall

The leaves blown onto my car window by the overnight wind. The feeling of brushing them off in the morning with the windshield wipers.

The linen or cotton thread used to bind gifts. I like to run the thread over my palms, between my fingers, and under my nails.

Taking a walk in the mist and seeing the minuscule droplets form in your hair or on the tips of your lashes. The slightly raspy voice of someone who was recently sick has something endearing to me.

The way people bend their heads downward to avoid stepping in puddles. The groan when they step on a loose tile and get a slosh of water in the backs of their shoes.

The browning that starts at the roots of the plants in my planters. The provocative purple of the aster flowers. That first, specific smell of the coats that come out of the winter wardrobe1.

  1. We have a habit of rotating our clothes twice a year; once in middle or towards the end of fall and once at the middle or towards the end of spring. The timing depends a bit on the temperature. Clothes of the season that has passed are put away in boxes or (often attic) closets.
