When friends are hurting
Often in life when a friend has a problem or a situation they want to discuss with you, words come easily. It is a dance, a back and forth of insights and humour. A lot can be said, and together you take the time to say it all.
Yet when I was sitting next to my best friend at the hospital, on the bench before their father's bed, the silence was so heavy, so dense, you could almost touch it. What words can be said at such a time? What can you say when a friend is hurting like this?
Sitting side by side, between the soft whispers of the family, we squeezed each others hand from time to time.
